Discovering Australian literature: The Long Prospect, by Elizabeth Harrower

Marc Bordier by Marc Bordier /

I was in Sydney on a business trip last week, enjoying the mildness of the Australian winter. Although I was in meetings throughout most of the week, I did find the time to take a walk along Circular Quay to explore the Writers’ Walk, a series of metal plaques embedded in the walkway of Sydney Harbour to celebrate the local and visiting writers who contributed to the history and greatness of Australian literature (http://goaustralia.about.com/od/cultureandthearts/ig/Sydney-Writers-Walk/)
The name of Elizabeth Harrower is not among the 47 writers whose names appear on Writers’ walk. Yet, she is considered by many as a classic Australian author, and the New Yorker recently featured a laudatory article to introduce its readers to one of her previously unpublished novels (http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2014/10/20/time-lies). I have chosen The Long Prospect to being exploring her works and will be reading it by the swimming pool under the sun of southern France during my holiday.
